Mountain spring - Nature awakens!
While there is still plenty of snow on the peaks and high alpine pastures and even ski tours are still possible, spring is coming in strong in the Gosau valley in mid-April. As soon as the first spots are free of snow, the wild spring flowers start to sprout around the Klaushofstube: March cups and marsh marigolds on the edges of the meadows and streams, and in the forest behind our hut the magnificent snow roses, also called Christmas roses, and the extremely rare and strictly protected wild daphne. But you can now also collect the first fresh, vitamin-rich wild herbs in the best organic quality here: wild watercress by the mountain creek near our hut, and the aromatic wild garlic down in the valley in the alluvial forests of the Traun river. Hostlady Alla will be happy to give you tips on collecting and preparing.
The transition from winter to early summer here in the Gosau Valley usually takes place within a few days, due to its special microclimatic location. There are no long, wet, cold and cloudy transition periods here, as in many lowland regions. The mountain sun is already enormous in April (position of the sun corresponds to around mid-August!), and the clear, unclouded mountain air does its part. In addition, two or three days of southern foehn and daytime temperatures of well over 20 degrees are nothing unusual.
You can sunbathe in the garden, have a barbecue on the terrace at lunchtime and, of course, go hiking in the sunny valley and around Lake Hallstatt or go on your first bike tour. This time of year is also perfect for sightseeing or shopping trips to the imperial city of Bad Ischl or the cultural metropolis of Salzburg: the inner cities are not yet overrun with visitors, and the mild but not too hot temperatures are ideal for a stroll through the city or a visit to the cultural monuments.
From May 7th onwards, all gondola cable cars to the mountain tops are running again, and the first alpine huts are already open.
And if you want to experience winter again: In the Dachstein-Krippenstein touring ski area at an altitude of over 2,000 m you can still do ski and snow-shoe hiking tours, as long as the snow conditions permit. You can borrow snowshoe equipment from us free of charge.
